Energetic, fun, and hilarious
I had no idea what to expect at first. I had only heard Friday Night Boys once or twice, and I knew just two of We the Kings' songs. What I missed out on, I can't believe.
First up were Friday Night Boys. They were amazing! These talented boys are all super sweet. The banter between guitarists is light-hearted and funny. The guitarist playing on my side was bragging about how great we were while the singer, who I don't know the name of (I'm still new to them), was the nicest guy and a fantastic singer. Rarely can you find someone who can sing as well as a recording; he was almost better. They were so energetic and fun, making the crowd jump, yell, interact, and have a lot of fun. The highlights of their set were Suicide Sunday and She's Finding Me Out.
Hey Monday, a band I've been listening to for a while, was next. I love them. Cassadee has a great, very unique voice. Despite spraining her ankle at the show, she was everywhere, moving and headbanging, having a great time. Mike, the lead guitarist on my side, was talking to us between songs, laughing with us, sitting on the edge of the stage, and just being great and very real. He was the coolest guy to talk to. New favorite guitarist? Sorry Jersey, but you've just been replaced! Rian Dawson, drummer for Top Gun: Maverick In Concert, replaced Hey Monday's tour drummer for a song, going absolutely nuts with all his energy. Hey Monday was an amazing part of the show, opening with Homecoming, closing with How You Love Me Now, and playing the acoustic Candles.
We the Kings!! I came to this concert knowing two of their songs, not having much of an opinion on the rest of their music. I've missed out. Travis (vocals) is so talented, as are the rest of the tour bands. He was talking to all his bandmates, making the audience work even harder than FNB. Hunter and Drew, the guitarist and bassist, would randomly switch back and forth, changing mics almost constantly. Everything they played was top-notch, and I really don't have a complaint about them. For one of their last songs, Jack ran onto the stage and replaced Hunter on guitar. They played all their best songs, including Secret Valentine and Skyway Avenue before ending with Check Yes Juliet. So much energy, and they made me scream even more than FNB, which was very hard to do.
Top Gun: Maverick In Concert, the headliners, were next. Not much to say here, I guess... Okay, I lied, there is too much to say to fit into this little box! Jack and Alex were poking fun at each other, jumping around the stage, and swearing up a storm. They even started a new trend: Marsh Pitting. They opened with Lost in Stereo, hitting the mark perfectly. The music was perfect, and Alex's voice is better live than recorded. They were upbeat and jumpy for all but two fan favorites: Remembering Sunday and their new song Therapy. They played a few oldies, including Jasey Rae, Coffeeshop Soundtrack, Six Feet Under the Stars, and closed with Poppin' Champagne. Zack was probably the calmest of the bunch, playing his bass with full focus and attention, but also pausing to smile and laugh at Jack and Alex's antics. Rian, though I couldn't really see him, played perfectly with so much passion. About halfway through the show, they experienced some technical difficulties for about ten or fifteen minutes.
All four bands threw a shocking amount of picks, sticks, and water bottles out to us in the crowd. They even tried to get some up to the balconies.
In the end, this was the most energetic concert I have ever been to. My body aches from moving, and my throat from yelling, but it was worth it. The most worthwhile concert you will see for a long time, and worth much more than the $23 we spent on tickets. These bands are all so amazingly talented, and I can honestly say this to all "haters": Alex can really sing--let him. The Friday Night Boys are going to be big. We the Kings are full of surprises, and Hey Monday can rock even when injured. You know you're just jealous of them. My only regret is my camera batteries dying.
Great fun, good price, lots of laughs, and the most unforgettable night yet.
